CO52 Syndesmosis Repair: Understanding Post-Operative Outcomes in the US Commercially Insured Population

Post-operative complications are common in ankle fractures but only 5% of patients who undergo syndesmosis repair experience implant-related (IRC) such as breakage or device failure. Clinical conditions associated with IRC poorly documented. This study evaluated concurrent diagnoses IRC. Patients (0-64 years old) within IBM MarketScan® Commercial database in- outpatient diagnosis fracture treated between 10/1/2015 – 3/2/2020 were identified. Eligible had continuous enrollment three months prior and one-year post day (defined “index”). Variables included: patient demographics, comorbidities, surgical intervention type at time index. All followed index flagged for Outcomes infection, non-union, residual pain (30-days post-surgery), new occurrence arthritis, instability, 1-year payments. Standard descriptive statistics (proportion, mean, median) calculated on all variables outcomes. Generalized linear models (link: log, family type: gamma) built to define payments complications. 5,812 identified, which 4.4% (257) IRC, resulting increased $9,286 (95% confidence interval (CI): $7,205 - $11,958, p<0.0001) over 12 post-index. 61.9% least one more condition: 43.2% pain, 21.4% 14.4% 8.6% nonunion 5.4% instability. infection affected 3.9% (10/257).
